a tweet and a poke: how educators harness the power of social networks

dr. alec couros, department of education, university of regina

9:00-10:30 young 216

In the last few years, the world of education has changed significantly as more and more teaching and learning practice shifts online. Web based communication has exploded, thanks in no small part to the emergence and increased popularity of social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter.

What implications does social networking have on education? And how are educators using social networks to not only engage their students, but also connect with each other? Keynote speaker, Dr Alec Couros will address these questions and inspire you to explore social networking personally and for your teaching practice.

Dr. Couros is actively engaged in social networks as both an educator and a participant. A graduate level professor in the University of Regina's Faculty of Education, his coursework focuses on how educators can best use these tools to reach their educational objectives.

This session will take you on a quick tour of innovative library buildings and services and will provide a sneak preview into the how Camosun College is revitalizing and renovating its library spaces, collections and services.

With the shift in the economy and some demographic realities, we are likely to see different generations of students in our classes as Gen X and Y’ers return to school to maintain their own competitiveness alongside the “millennial” bubble. This session will look at the implications of a multi generational classroom and how these generations might differ from ourselves and each other.  We’ll also briefly look at some of the impact of using technology within such a shifting teaching environment.
